CHAPTER 10

Rats will always look out for their own survival, as they should really. I decided finally that it was too much, it was time to leave. I told the guys at work, finished up all of my odd jobs at the house, and packed up some of my shit. The truth was that I knew that if I didn’t leave soon it would not end well for me at all. Maybe I was like a rat trying to save itself yet I can see that I had caught myself just in time. I realized that I was pretty well hooked on cocaine, booze and the good times in general. All I could think of something my father had told me once.

“Son you pick it.”

I remember asking my father what he was talking about when he said this, just what he meant it by pick it? My father went on to tell me that his entire life he had been addicted to drugs, booze, whores, gambling, shit if there were a vice he was addicted to it he said laughing. My father told me that I had to pick my vice and simply go with it. I laughed and told my father that I picked whores. My father only looked at me with his non-blinking blue eyes and told me to be careful. He laughed and told me that whores may very well be the most dangerous of all of the vices. I just laughed not really understanding what he was telling me. In the words of the immortal 2Pac.

“Picture jewels being handed to an innocent child.”

I hate to admit it but at this moment it is the first time in my life that I realize that the old man was actually right.

Amelia was furious at me, I had called her bluff by deciding to leave. She had told me to leave before, only this time I decided that I would just do it. She was gone on a trip with her best friend doing God knows what when I decided to go. It was easier for me this way, I wouldn’t have her trying to freak out on me. I simply packed the shit that I needed for a few months and decided I would come back and get the rest when I was settled. I didn’t take much, just a suitcase full of clothes and around a thousand dollars in cash. Amelia had told me once,

“You can head east or you can head west but I don’t feel you need stay here any longer.”

I could have stayed though, but why. If I stayed it was a guarantee that I would end up in jail. I knew that I would end up losing it. If all else I would end up a laughing stock as Amelia went wild. I could have went back to the hometown with all of my old friends. I would be among a group of people that I considered brothers and sisters. That would have been the easiest thing to do, yet the worse thing to do at the same time.
